The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian cricket team squad for the 2023 Asia Cup on August 21, 2023. The tournament, which is being hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will be played in the ODI format as preparation for the upcoming 2023 Cricket World Cup.
India has been placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan and Nepal, while Group B contains Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The Indian squad announcement was made by captain Rohit Sharma and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar in a press conference on Tuesday.
The squad features a mix of experienced players and young guns. Rohit Sharma will lead the team as captain, with Hardik Pandya as vice-captain. Other key players include Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Prasidh Krishna.
There were some doubts over the fitness of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom have been recovering from injuries. However, they have both made a comeback to the squad. Since Rahul has a niggle, Sanju Samson has been named as the back-up player.
The Asia Cup squad holds extra importance as it will more or less give an idea about what the squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 will look like. India's performance in the continental tournament will be key to their chances at the marquee event later this year at home.
India's first match is against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Sri Lanka. It will be interesting to see how the team performs in the tournament with this mix of experience and youth.
